BBC Audio books was first formed in 2001. It was an integration of three of the leading audio businesses. These were Chivers Press, Cover to Cover, and BBC Radio Collection.

Today, BBC Audio books is the United Kingdom's leading audio publisher. As part of BBC Worldwide Audio & Music, they are part of BBC's commercial elements. All the profits generated through their sells goes back to helping BBC provide their programs and services.

BBC Audio books America in turn is the leading source of dramatized audio books in the United States. This is also true of Canada. Their audio books are distributed on CDs as well as in digital download form.
